Taboo words: from word properties to brain processing

13 giugno 2019, ore 13:00-15:00.

Sala Enzo Paci, Direzione del Dipartimento di Filosofia, Via Festa del Perdono, 7

Swearing is a unique linguistic behavior that has always characterized language communication. Swear or taboo words are used cross-culturally and by people of all social extractions, with a relatively high frequency of occurrence. Despite their importance and frequency, taboo words have received very little attention in the cognitive neuroscience literature; thus, how the mind/brain deals with taboo words is largely unknown. In this talk, I will present some recent behavioral and neuroimaging studies investigating how the mind/brain recognizes and processes taboo words. The findings will offer a first psycho- and neurolinguistics characterization of the taboo lexicon and, more in general, contribute to understand how language affects people.
