In this talk I reconstruct the distinction between Referentialism and Predicativism for proper names. Syntactically, names appear as arguments in sentences like “Alfred is a logician” and as count nouns in sentences like “There are two Alfreds in Princeton”. We will see how referentialists and predicativists explain these syntactic data, as well as the different semantic accounts they propose for names. The key predicativist thesis is that names form a separate category of proper count nouns. Recently, predicativism has also been boosted by Ora Matushansky’s argument that names are predicates in the naming costruction too, that is, in sentences like “My parents named me Delia”. I will argue that, if this is correct, the simple predicativist thesis that name-predicates are just proper count nouns cannot be correct. Finally, I develop an analogy between the naming and the nominating construction (as in “The board of directors nominated her President”), and between names and titles, and I argue that the syntax and semantics of names is more complex than simple referentialism and simple predicativism made it out to be.
