Actors Unmasked: The Idea of The Real Performer

The actor as a cultural figure has often been accused of dissemblance, artificiality and untrustworthiness. At least, this is what William Hazlitt claims in his 1817 essay, ‘On Actors and Acting’. However, Hazlitt springs to the defence of actors by arguing that their ‘real’ appearance on the street is more pleasurable than that of men who are ‘truly’ great. In this paper, I will investigate the notion of the ‘real actor’ as a fantasy and outcome of stage performance. In doing so, I investigate the ambivalent social status of actors, considering how they might be situated unclearly within a ‘professional’ class, and how they lay claim to identity as ‘artists’ through the public depiction of their everyday lives. I argue that the ambiguities of actors’ social status can be traced in the material objects that they accrue, such as costumes, props and portraits, and suggest that the case of the ‘real’ actor reveals the broader confusions and anxieties at stake in professional and artistic identity, since the birth of the modern marketplace.
