Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the similarities between Pierre Bourdieu's sociology and the so-called classical pragmatism. In the spirit of this revival, the presentation will propose a comparison between John Dewey’s and Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of action. This comparison will hinge on an analysis of the concepts of habit and interest. On the one hand, the concept of habit represents the background from which the similarities between the concepts of human action of Dewey and Bourdieu emerge. On the other hand, the concept of interest indicates where the paths of the two theoretical proposals diverge. In the final part, the possibility of building a Dewey/Bourdieu theory of action will be discussed. This theory will have to take into account both the asymmetrical nature of social relations and the human capacity to define and reconstruct problematic situations
