Abstract

In the philosophy of fiction, a majority view is continuism, i.e., the thesis that names, or genuine singular terms more in general, which directly refer to ordinary real individuals, such as e.g. “Napoleon”, also so refer to those individuals in fiction-involving sentences, such as e.g. those that constitute Tolstoy’s War and Peace (cf. e.g. Currie 1990, Kripke 2013, Friend 2001, 2011, 2014). Yet a minority view is exceptionalism, i.e., the thesis that such terms change their semantic value in such sentences, either by directly referring to fictional surrogates of those individuals (exceptional hyperrealism on fictional characters: Bonomi 2008, Motoarca 2014) or by acquiring a kind of descriptive content (exceptional irrealism on fictional characters, Garcia-Carpintero 2018).

In this talk, first of all, I want to support sophisticated exceptionalism, according to which both parties precisely are partly right and partly wrong. In the fictional use of fiction-involving sentences, those terms directly refer to ordinary real individuals, as continuists claim in general. Yet both in the internal and in the external metafictional use of fiction-involving sentences, such terms change their semantic value, as exceptionalists claim in general (see also Voltolini 2006, 2013, and possibly Bonomi 2008). Moreover, I will argue that sophisticated exceptionalist hyperrealism is to be preferred to sophisticated exceptionalist irrealism (possibly defended by Predelli 2017): (just) in those uses, such terms directly refer to fictional surrogates.
