Abstract

A wide range of views and associated investigations in science, in religion, and in philosophy, presuppose that there is what I call metaphysical structure, whereby some goings-on are taken to be fundamental (or comparatively fundamental), and others to metaphysically depend on the (comparative) fundamenta. How should the notions of fundamentality and metaphysical dependence operative in these and other cases be understood? Here I advance my preferred ‘package deal’ approach to metaphysical structure—what I call the ‘Fundamentality First’ view—as combining (i) a primitivist account of fundamentality, on which what makes it the case that some goings-on (at a world) are fundamental is a primitive matter, with (ii) a certain pluralist account of metaphysical dependence, on which there is no core generic relation of such dependence, but rather only diverse specific such relations.
